On Election Day, August 6, 1855, a violent riot erupted in Louisville. Mobs from the anti-Catholic and nativist political party called “Know Nothing” led riots to keep German and Irish immigrants from voting. There were 22 deaths and several reports of arson and looting. The “Know Nothing” party held the overwhelming majority of elected offices at the time.
