The book is about Grainger's war experiences as a member of Company I, 6th Kentucky Infantry of the Orphan Brigade. The book details Grainger’s war experiences with the brigade from 1861 until his capture at Jonesboro, Georgia, in August of 1864. He describes being a prisoner-of-war where he was taken back to Kentucky and forced to participate in two drawings by lot for the execution of a number of his fellow prisoners. He vividly details the trauma and suspense of the drawings and executions, and his intent to kill the Federal General responsible.
